Last weekend, Broadway star Constantine Maroulis began a limited engagement with the rock group Jessie’s Girl in a show titled “Back to the Eighties” at New York City’s Canal Room. He is slated to do 2 shows every Saturday night (8:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.) until October 26, 2013.
Mr. Maroulis earned a Tony Nomination for his portrayal of a "wanna be" rocker in the Broadway hit show “Rock of Ages.” He played the role for nearly two years and then toured the country with the show. His most recent Broadway role in “Jekyll and Hyde” showed another side of his ability to sing the heck out of a song whether it is rock or more classic styled. A visit to the Canal Room this past Saturday saw him performing a variety of songs including selections from Journey, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, as well as some of the ones he sang in "Rock of Ages." He is performing with the band named Jessie’s Girl who has been doing the 80s show for well over a year now at the Canal Room.
The members of Jessie’s Girl have put together a unique way of reliving the fun of the 1980s through their show. The group is made up of three singers, Jenna O’Gara. Chris Hall, Mark Rinzel and the band members Sky, Eric Presti, Mark Maenza, and Drew Mortali. Those who lived in the 1980's will enjoy seeing the costumes and props that the band uses to highlight artists such as Cindy Lauper or George Michaels.
Dancing and singing along with both Constantine and Jessie’s Girl is allowed and encouraged. There is something very contagious about the fun that all the performers are having that rubs off on the audience. So be prepared to sing out loud and just enjoy letting loose.
The 8:00 show is billed as an event for 13 and over while the 11:30 show is listed as an event for over 21. The 8:00 show ran for the first time last weekend and a good range of ages ended up attending. The 11:30 show has been running for awhile now and has a reputation for attracting a good sized crowd looking to have a night of fun and music.
If you like the music of the 1980's and you want to celebrate it big style, this is the show for you. The music is catchy, the atmosphere is fun, and you're going to walk out with a smile on your face feeling a bit nostalgic for that time period when life was a bit more simple than it is now.
The Canal Room is located at 285 West Broadway, just a few steps off of Canal Street. It’s a nicely designed layout for a show like this one as there is an ample area for standing to view the show as well as a VIP area with tables and seating. At the 8:00 show, there were a few bar stools available but don’t count on them for the 11:30 show. If you’re driving in, there are several parking garages nearby. If you come in via bus or train, take the subway downtown and get off at or near Canal Street. Subway entrances are located close by to the club.
