The Vintage Masters card image gallery is being updated each day during this, the set's preview week. And since Vintage Masters contains Conspiracy cards, sometimes never-before-seen spoilers come into it with little fanfare, like this one:
Marchesa, the Black Rose 1UBR
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard (Mythic)
Dethrone (Whenever this creature attacks the player with the most life or tied for the most life, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
Other creatures you control have dethrone.
Whenever a creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it dies, return that card to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step.
Dethrone, one of the other new keywords debuting exclusively for Conspiracy, is aggressive and combotastic. It seems like it may only be on legendary creatures (except when Marchesa grants it, naturally), however. Marchesa has an incredible suite of abilities for her body and cost, reminiscent of Mikaeus the Unhallowed, but in some senses inverted. In addition to having some brutal interactions with creatures with undying - making them really live up to the mechanic's name - Marchesa also fits well with suicide-type strategies involving paying life, as well as the old Grove of the Burnwillows tricks that once involved Punishing Fire or Kavu Predator for repeated heavy damage. Since the triggers happen on attacking - and not damage - a Black Rose-led army's swing against an opponent in a better life position will actually land hits when they're each 1 power bigger, meaning Marchesa is less an equalizer and more a finisher. Everything that makes her strong in Conspiracy also makes her ridiculous in Commander.
What do you think of this femme fatale of a Wizard? Let me know in the comments.
