...Wii shovelware not shown...
What are Console Offerings? It's a weekly New Games Release list that cuts through the shovelware and highlights the games that matter. This week, Sega quietly releases an RPG with sleeper hit potential, Dragon Age addicts get to revive their addiction, and apparently some game about Gods or Spartans or something :-)
God of War III | PS3 Exclusive | SCEA/Santa Monica Studios | Rated "M"
Say hello to the 500lb gorilla in the room, with insanely high review scores and a stunning, visually epic game to warrant them. You may have been fooled into believing Final Fantasy XIII was the PS3's killer app. God of War III, however, should prove to be the real system seller. Kratos gets a blood soaked thrill-ride to wrap up his trilogy.
Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening | Multiplatform | EA/Bioware | Rated "M"
Picking up the storyline where Origins ended, Awakenings is a bona fide Expansion pack (remember those?) boasting a lengthy campaign, five new party members, intelligent and terrifying new Darkspawn, and an old favorite from the original. Chances are if you've sunk 100 hours into Dragon Age: Origins, this one is a no-brainer.
Resonance of Fate | 360 & PS3 | SEGA | Rated "T"
(Known as End of Eternity in Japan, developed by Tri-Ace) A steampunk inspired, dystopian world is the backdrop for Sega's newest RPG that combines real-time and turn-based fighting, and frankly looks more compelling - story wise, at least - than the latest Final Fantasy installment. Take a look at this trailer for proof.
Sam & Max 2: Beyond Time & Space | Wii | Atari/Telltale | Rated "T"
This collection from TellTale comprises 5 standalone episodes on one disc, and is pretty reasonable priced at only $19.99. You'll journey to the North Pole, Easter Island, and the clever corners of your mind to unravel the mysteries. Also, there are obligatory zombies. If you're a fan of Sam & Max' zany adventures and don't yet own it on PC, give this a whirl.
Metro 2033 | 360 & PC | THQ | Rated "M"
Inspired by Russian author Dmitriy Glukhovskiy comes this first person survival shooter spliced with "RPG-lite" elements. Wait a minute, I've played this! All kidding aside, it's no surprise that the "Role Playing Shooter" genre would be iterated, but this sci-fi shooter also boasts a morality system, and a more fleshed out story than Gearbox's sleeper hit. The grim post-nuclear story looks fascinating, the trailer is captivating, and this could be another sleeper hit.
