Why should you consider volunteering at an animal shelter? First of all, why volunteer at all? Isn't it hard enough to make ends meet without giving up your time for free? The truth is that volunteering has lots of benefits.
(1) It is a great feeling to have the opportunity to give love and affection to animals. Just petting animals can lower your blood pressure and calm you down.
(2) You are benefiting the animals and preparing them to be adopted into a new home.
(3) You get to meet and be around other people who share your love for animals.
(4) You are helping the shelter by providing a valuable service. Budgets are tight and there are only so many jobs. Volunteers fill a gap by helping to give animals the attention they need.
(5) Maybe in the future, your experience as a volunteer will increase your job skills and help you to obtain a paid position. Volunteering may open a door for you.
Check out your local animal shelters like the Capital Area Humane Society and the Ingham County Animal Shelter. They often need volunteers and your time and energy may be welcomed and appreciated. Who knows? You may find happiness you did not anticipate.
