In some circles feminism has become a forgotten or misunderstood word. There are as many takes on the "F" word, as there are groups espousing this way of thinking. Gloria Steinem has been quoted so often, with regard to the feminist point of view. Without Gloria and many other women who dared to step forward, the women of today would have a vastly different life experience. One famous Gloria Steinem quote for you to consider is, "Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning."
Feminism can be a way of embracing how we look at the world, and it can be a change agent. The "F" word way of thinking can be a way to simply give another women an advantage, when the opportunity presents itself. "F" word thinking may engender a positive behavior as it relates to a friend, a co-worker, a grandmother, a neighbor, an aunt, a sister, a Mother, a child, a grand-child, or an organization. Consideration of the "F" word can bring down barriers to communication. Sectioning yourself off in just your group is a barrier. Sectioning yourself off with just other working women, or just associating with women who work at home, or living inside of racial or ethnic groups only, or considering your closest circles of friends first are ways to exclude. The "F" word is an inclusive idea that can extend your usual focus. Used in a positive way, the "F" word can be a force for the greater good of both men and women.
Additionally, when Gloria Steinem said, "We need to remember across generations that there is as much to learn as there is to teach," it is an encouragement to remove generational barriers. Women in their twenties may not agree with women in their thirties. Women in their thirties may not agree with women in their forties, fifties, and beyond, but respect for what each generation has done to further the advancement of women should be remembered, and respected. Your great-grandmother might have marched so that you have the privilege to vote. Your grand-mother or mother might have marched for ERA. You may have a position now, because of the women who went before you. No doubt the women who come after you will thrive, in some way, because of your contributions.
The "F" word has always meant "Take Action." Consider taking some small or not so small daily or weekly action that will create a better world for both men, and women. Planting positive seeds of action can change the world. Consider mentally filing the "F" word, for future use. As you travel around this planet, and during moments when you can use the idea of the "F" word, take positive action. Give advantage to a fellow women. From your desk to the world. That's how it works.
