After economic issues, and financial crisis', we are entering an age of restlessness in travel. While some people want it to be affordable, easy and quick to design a vacation, many others are looking for something different. Whether you desire to find an unusual location, create a vacation unlike any other, or simply want to see what trends are available, the different ideas listed here are entertaining- even if they aren‘t exactly your cup of tea.

Reality Travel. "Much of the travel industry focuses on whisking customers into a fantasy land, reality tour operators take the opposite tack, escorting tourists into Brazilian slums and South African townships. If you come across crime lords or open sewers, well, that's part of the point. Some call it voyeuristic, but proponents argue that reality tours bring much needed revenue to poor neighborhoods, and the best ones are sensitively handled.“ says MSNBC writer Elisabeth Eaves

Poseidon Undersea Resort
Under Sea resorts. Accessible by elevator and nestled in the crystal clear cerulean waters of a 5,000 acre lagoon, Poseidon Undersea Resort is the worlds first sea floor resort where you can spend the night 40 feet underwater in incomparable luxury. reservations are available starting on September 15th 2009. And Dubai, naturally, has plans for its own underwater hotel. Set for completion in one year, called the Crescent Hydropolis. But maybe you don‘t want to go quite that far? When guests visit Jules' Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida, they discover that the name is no marketing gimmick. Just to enter the Lodge, one must actually scuba dive 21 feet beneath the surface of the sea. Entering through an opening in the bottom of the habitat, the feeling is much like discovering a secret underwater clubhouse.
Volunteer travel. You can volunteer your time and teach English, reading and writing, help with conservation and wildlife efforts, or help with community developments. They don‘t pay for your vacation, but you do get a nice tax break when you take a volunteer vacation. "Teaching in a socially and economically disadvantaged area of Rio de Janeiro —minutes from the glorious beach, but a million miles from luxury— is eye-opening and surprising.“ Says James Baer, Volunteer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Dark tourism. There are plenty of examples of dark tourism, or grief tourism. Here are a few of the most famous, or notorious:
- Ground Zero, site of the former World Trade Center twin buildings
- Nazi death camps, where six million people died
- Crash sites, such as Lockerbie in Scotland, where a TWA jumbo jet was blown up in 1988
- the Paris tunnel in which Princess Diana was killed in 1997 being chased by paparazzi
- Cambodia's killing fields, mass graves for some 20,000 Cambodians murdered during the Khmer Rouge genocide of the late 1970s
- Central Park's Strawberry Fields memorial to John Lennon, who was assassinated nearby outside the Dakota in 1980
- Soham, a small English town, where two 10-year-olds were kidnapped and murdered by their school caretaker
- Hiroshima in Japan, where the first atomic bomb was dropped
- Chernobyl, where tour guides use geiger counters to test radiation while escorting visitors
- the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam, in memory of a 13-year-old Jewish schoolgirl who kept a diary while hiding from the Nazis. At the Bergen Belsen concentration camp (now memorial site) is the location at which Anne frank and her sister Margot Frank are buried. A head stone was placed by their father in the field where visitors can leave flowers, light candles, place stones (jewish tradition), and remember them by. (Bergen Belsen is about an hour outside of Hannover, Germany)
- Hitler's mountain residence at Berchtesgaden, in the Bavarian Alps
Ghost tourism. 17th century witchcraft trials? Salem, Massachusetts, of course.
Some streets of London are said to still be haunted by Jack the Ripper.
The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast? This is where she axe-murdered her parents and you can sleep in the room where it happened.
And then there's Bran Castle in Transylvania, in Romania, home of the vampires, and supposedly the inspiration for the novel.
