A strange phenomenon has occurred: the unrelenting drama from the Far Right in American politics and religion--which on the crazy right are the same thing--has finally played itself out. They have, as far as I can see, fulfilled the Law of Diminishing Returns, and gone bankrupt. That is to say, for example, that five years of racial hatred towards President Obama have brought us to the point where we can say, "Yeah, you hate President Obama. Is that all you've got?"
Well, they also hate the President's wife. So it becomes, "Okay, you hate Michelle Obama and her healthy food. What else have you got?"
And then there is "Obamacare." The Teabaggers in elected office are standing on the floor of Congress with their suicide vests strapped on. We ask, "Okay, you hate Obamacare so much that you want to repeal and replace it. So what's the replacement program?"
Well, guess what? There isn't any replacement plan. The House of Representatives only wants to repeal Obamacare; they have no replacement posted on the Internet or laid away in a file cabinet in Washington, waiting for its day in the sun. So the question becomes simply, "Is that all you have?" And the answer is, "Yes. That's all we've got. We just hate Obama."
So it came to pass the other night that I turned on the first my the MSNBC programs that I follow, and there was Chris Matthews going on about the Republicans while ranting at his guests--his lack of interview skills is hard to take on any given night--and suddenly I just turned it off. I went and wrote articles on my computer. I listened to music. I made dinner.
The granular, minute-by-hysterical-minute of the "journalistic" community has run aground, at least as far as I can see. The Teabaggers who are allowed to run riot in the House of Representatives have nothing to say anymore. The Religious Right who inspired them have their own problems, as in the bankruptcy of the Crystal Cathedral and the Barna Report that keeps telling them that their churches are emptying out. The Right has become nothing more than the anti-Left. They've got nothing.
If they had the guts to tell us what it's really all about, they would say something like, "Don't you realize that he's black, you idiot?" Because that is what it really is about. It is about the fact that the Bible Belt resides in the Deep South where the subjugation of one race of people is acceptable in order to give another race of people a sense of superiority. Ignorance is far more comfortable than knowledge, since learning informs us that since we didn't make ourselves, we have nothing to be proud of in what we are.
You might say that "being gay is the new black," and there is more than a little justification for that opinion. The welcome reality that racist language is unacceptable in mainstream America has forced the Religious Right to re-direct their raw, naked rage towards the LGBT community rather than expressing it in lynch mobs that drag black men into the night and put them to death. If the South, as a community, were to repudiate that legacy I would stand up and cheer for them, but in the reality-based community we know that liberal Southern whites will face lynch mobs and fire bombs if they speak out for justice.
It has come to the point that the hotbeds of intolerance and hatred worldwide are collectively called the Global South now. Where is the Global South? It is Uganda, with its "kill the gays" laws that were inspired by American evangelical preachers who exported their homophobia. The Global South in in India where women are treated like targets--not even objects--and a simple ride on the bus can be the end of your life and female reporters are groped and almost attacked when they attempt to cover a news event. The Global South is in Middle Eastern countries that sentence a woman to lashing as a "punishment" for being raped.
The American South now has the notoriety of having their attitudes dominating the House of Representatives in spite of the fact that they do not dominate that body through the weight of a majority. And the rich corporate executives who see it within their grasp to purchase America, bankrupt it and walk away with the money are the ones who purchased the Tea Party (after they founded it).
People all over America are watching this happen. Some are preparing to flee, or they have done so already. Thousands of older Americans cross international borders every year, taking their Social Security with them, seeking life in a country where there is such a thing as a sane government.
The goal of Al-Qaeda is being achieved...by Teabaggers who want to tear down the government of the United States of America just like Osama bin-Laden. They are doing it with gerrymandered voting districts (which are illegal). They are achieving the restriction of voting rights. They are stripping funds from programs that feed children and provide care for our veterans. They demand that we dismantle a system of health care for the American people. They are attempting to destroy America from within; the only difference between Teabaggers and bin Laden is that he tried to destroy America from without.
People all over America are watching this happen. They are going to discover that if social action does not arise from the situation, it will go on happening until it has happened and the American government no longer exists. America cannot be destroyed by an attack from anywhere, but it can be destroyed by Americans if no one intervenes. Teabaggers are domestic terrorists, and they are aided and abetted by primitive evangelical fanatics who are religious terrorists seeking to take America hostage and then destroy our government. Are you okay with this?
Perhaps at that point there will be some social action. It may or may not be too late. Either way, you are going to witness it. Are you ready? Think about this the next time you hear Republicans chanting, "Shut 'er down! Shut 'er down!"
