Conservatives cry out that liberalism will be the death of democracy. Liberal thinking brought the very conservative Pilgrims to America's shores. Liberal thinking granted peace to the Indians and permitted them to (finally) exist along side a Federal government with a Tribal form of government. Not to be completely exterminated as was the apparent mission of the times and a standard practice of occupying conquerors of the past.
Liberal thinking pulled a nation out of depression
Liberal thinking is what lead a very conservative Republican Party to advocate freedom for slaves. Liberal thinking put people to work during the great depression to build our bridges, interstate highways and national parks. Liberal thinking put food in the bellies of those starving and helped a nation pull itself up by the bootstraps (that is what the food stamp program and welfare did) so that they could once again contribute to a gross national product and buy goods once again. Products purchased from J.C. Penny, Marriott and Hilton who would make their first millions during the depression. One day many of those same people would own their own businesses. They would not have done so on their own, no, it took liberal thinking to give them a hand up when they were on their knees. All the while the likes of Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Rothschild, Guggenheim, and Straus simply looked the other way and tucked their wealth away. Rockefeller who would tuck away his wealth in a non-profit Colonial Williamsburg foundation to protect it from the government's taxing fingers. Let the country be damned they weren't giving up their fortunes!
It was liberal thinking that set our sites on the moon and made us dream that we could walk among the stars. It was liberal thinking that said women should have a vote, be able to work and have a choice to do so. To go on working even after the World War ended and the factories no longer had to rely on their labor to forge ahead as the leading manufacturer of the industrial revolution.
It was liberal thinking that saved an auto industry that conservatives cried out to let them go bankrupt so that other wealthy men could scoop them up at a discount or garner larger profits from their foreign investments. It is liberal thinking that created the internet, that has linked a planet together and has begun to give the power to ALL people to overthrow their own dictators and tyrants.
we paint and sing and dance
It is due to liberal thinking that we paint and sing and dance instead of scrape and dig and toil our whole lives through. It is NOT the conservative way of thinking that provides the opportunity for the poorest and most disadvantaged of society a chance to rise up, contribute to the world and make history. It is the liberal way of thinking that gives that poor wretched soul a dream and vision that they can be more than a product of their environment. The conservative way of thinking is to hold on, pull back, hoard, and exclude. It is the liberal way of thinking that let's go, spreads out, expands and includes.
One man employs 100 people or 100 men start new businesses
Conservatives write that the old adage: "It takes money to make money" is wrong. Try a search and you know what you find? All the conservatives say you don't use YOUR money that you use SOMEONE else's money to make money. So, while they may say they are against Government spending your money, they have no problem with spending your money themselves. Conservative thinking will bear one man creating a business that employs 100 laborers. Liberal thinking will bear 100 businesses created by those laborers.
Conservatives control the wealth and the money is not trickling down. They maintain control because they have convinced so many that if you just work hard enough and long enough and smart enough you can one day have what they have. Do you not see by their actions that they will never let you in to their circle? They have different rules and you are 'the help'. YOU bailed them out with YOUR money. You loaned the banks money when they ran out...did you check their credit? When they crashed Wall Street and you lost your pensions they paid themselves bonuses. When the media pointed out their lavish parties and conventions for executives whose Christmas party did they cancel?
Liberal thinking brought freedom to the people of the former Soviet Socialist Republic, to Poland, and united a divided Germany. Oh yes you may give the credit to one man who cried out 'tear down that wall' but make no mistake, it was those filled with the fire and zeal of liberalism that did the work. The conservative way of thinking was to remain in one's place, accept one's 'lot in life', to know your place and obey. It is liberal thinking that is the unknown anguish conservatives feel inside their hearts, heads and party.
Conservatives goad their minions to lay blame
Little do they realize that it is liberal thinking that inspires them to liberate themselves from the yoke of government. They languish in their confusion, immobile by their dilemma that they blame government for every ailment yet they cry out for government to provide the cure. They revile the very entity that they run to for sanctuary while clutching their rights written on parchment in the blood of those sacrificed on their behalf. It is like the child who runs to the bully to protect him from the meanness of the playground. Ultimately he is beaten by the one he thought protected him. They want more jobs. Who do they hold responsible for those jobs? Government. Yet, they don’t want government to grow. Corporations adopt a policy of not hiring so they can be more profitable and then they goad their minions to lay the blame at their government’s feet.
the conservatives' enigma
Conservative thinking would have left the caveman in the cave and writing to the gods. Like apes retreating into the jungle and grunting at intrusion. Conservative thinking would have left us in the Dark Ages and no renaissance would have dawned. No pyramids would have risen in the deserts and no ships would have sailed the seas. No Christ would have risen nor been received. We would not have the words; "what benefits a man if he should gain the whole world but forfeit his soul". The logic of conservatism may percolate in the mind but it is a liberal dose of fire in the heart that incites one to greatness. If there is no liberal there is no seed to plant. If there is no conservative there is no cultivation. It does not matter whether the egg came before the chicken, what matters is that it takes both of them to have more chicken. One cannot live without the other. One cannot thrive to the exclusion of the other. The enigma of the conservative is that they believe it can.
