When members of Congress return to Washington after Labor Day, they will have a full plate. One of the issues they will hopefully tackle is the defunding of Obamacare, the president's signature legislation. Richard Manning, vice president of public policy and communication for the conservative Americans for Limited Government, said Thursday in an exclusive interview with Examiner.com that Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., is instrumental in the effort to defund the massive law that has already had a negative impact on the nation's economy.
"McMorris Rodgers is the lynchpin for defunding Obamacare," he said, expressing hope the congresswoman's constituents would contact her office and encourage her to take a leadership role in stopping the law.
McMorris Rodgers, the number four Republican in the House, said that efforts to defund the law are not going to work.
“To get the entire bill repealed, or defunded, is probably not realistic,” she said the day after a spirited town hall in Spokane. “But I do think there are provisions in the law that we can get delayed, or provisions in the law we can get defunded.”
The Washington Republican said that parts of the law "are not ready" to be fully implemented and could be removed with bipartisan support.
But that's not enough for many who say the entire law needs to be defunded.
Last Thursday, Breitbart said, 80 Republicans sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, endorsing a plan to defund Obamacare.
But GOP leaders like McMorris Rodgers appear to be galvanizing around a plan to simply put off implementation by a full year, Mike FLynn said.
Leaders seem concerned that a continuing resolution that does not fund Obamacare would be vetoed, leading to a shutdown of the government.
"Party leaders are concerned that they would be blamed for any shutdown," Flynn added.
Flynn also observed that much of the funding for the law is mandated by the law itself. Even if the government shut down, Obamacare would still be funded.
Thanks to the efforts of conservative lawmakers like Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Mike Lee, R-Utah, the public has become more aware of the negative impact of the law. Over 980,000 people have signed an online petition at dontfundobamacare.com.
A petition posted by Manning's organization also calls on McMorris Rodgers to defund the law before it's too late.
"Unless the House uses its constitutional power of the purse to defund the law’s implementation and amend the law to repeal the Medicaid expansion and insurance exchange subsidies, it appears highly doubtful that Obamacare will be ever be rolled back," the petition says.
If McMorris Rodgers votes to fund Obamacare, the petition adds, "she will own it."
