Conservative Christians get behind ‘man on dog’ Santorum

Christian conservatives are getting behind Rick “man on dog” Santorum, a so-called family values Republican that once compared homosexuality to “man on dog” and “man on child” sexual activity.

On Saturday a cabal of conservative Christian leaders met in Texas in search of a conservative candidate that could challenge Mitt Romney for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. The anyone but Romney social conservatives were faced with a choice between Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. In the end, the majority favored Santorum with their endorsement.

It is no surprise religious conservatives would favor Rick Santorum with their endorsement. Santorum has a well documented history as a religious extremist. Santorum has a history of advocating for anti-gay, anti-woman policies and positions that are draconian in nature, and contrary to the secular values upon which this nation was founded.

For example, in the past Santorum has claimed that abortion is responsible for problems with Social Security; that doctors providing abortion services should be prosecuted as criminals; that poor, unwed mothers don’t really need college educations; that a woman’s right to reproductive freedom is comparable to slavery; that there is something wrong with families in which both parents work; that women wanting to work outside the home is a problem attributable to “radical feminism.”

Santorum compared Senate Democrats to Adolf Hitler during the debate over filibustering judicial nominees; claimed that there is no right to privacy; and claimed that married couples do not have the right to use birth control.

Campaigning in Concord, New Hampshire, last week, Santorum tried to defend his opposition to gay marriage before an audience of college students. When Santorum tried to argue that gay-marriage was a slippery slope leading to polygamy the young, intelligent audience booed Santorum’s overt homophobia, a homophobia grounded in ignorance and religious superstition.

Santorum’s homophobia is legendary, and has taken on a life of its own. His name, “Santorum,” has become a dirty joke, and rightly so. Santorum’s vicious and incessant attacks on gay and lesbian people has angered and hurt many. As just reward for his persecution of the LGBT community Santorum’s name has taken on a new meaning:

Santorum: The frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.

While Christian conservative leaders may hail Santorum as a family values candidate, for progressives and others, Santorum represents Christian homophobia and hate, religious superstition, and a cruel ignorance.
