Conor Kennedy, 18, was arrested outside of the White house on Wednesday, Feb.13 with his father Robert F.Kennedy, and actress Daryl Hannah while protesting against the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline according to Radar Online reports.
The Sierra Club press release read, “After being taken away from the White House in handcuffs, both Kennedys were driven to a Park Police station and released after paying a fine.”
It has been a tough year for young Conor Kennedy who has been mourning the suicide of his mother Mary Richardason Kennedy and a heartbreak following his 2012 summer romance, and split with pop singer Taylor Swift.
Conor and his father Robert F. Kennedy are following in the Kennedy family activists footsteps and are very active with the Sierra Club.
“For the first time in the Sierra Club’s 120-year history, we have joined the ranks of visionaries of the past and present to engage in civil disobedience, knowing that the issue at hand is so critical, it compels the strongest defensible action,” said Michael Brune, executive director of the environmental group.
“We cannot afford to allow the production, transport, export and burning of the dirtiest oil on Earth via the Keystone XL pipeline. President Obama must deny the pipeline and take decisive steps to address climate disruption, the most significant issue of our time.”
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the president of Waterkeeper Alliance, said in an emailed statement from his organization, "It's unfortunate that civil disobedience is the only recourse against a catastrophic and criminal enterprise that will enrich a few while impoverishing the rest of humanity and threatening the future of civilization."
