The next concert in the 2013 Tangents Guitar Series will be a solo recital by Connie Sheu. Sheu has prepared a program consisting entirely of contemporary and modern works by women composers. These composers include Germaine Tailleferre, one of the composers in “Les Six” organized by Jean Cocteau to honor the adventurous spirit of Erik Satie. (Better known members of Les Six included Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, and Arthur Honegger.) The contemporary composers in Sheu’s repertoire include Sofia Gubaidulina, Annette Kruisbrink, Dale Kavanagh, and Clarice Assad. In addition Sheu will soon be collaborating with Assad on a new composition for guitar as a winner of Assad’s “Call for New Music for Guitar” competition.
Sheu’s recital will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22, in the Chapel of the Unitarian Universalist Church of San Francisco (1187 Franklin Street). Admission will be $15 with a special $10 rate at the door for students with ID. Brown Paper Tickets has set up an event page for advance purchase. Further information about the specific concerts can also be found at the Tangents Web site.
