Local literati unite! Here is cause for bookish nutmeggers to celebrate…
On Friday, April 19th, there will be a launch event for the Connecticut Center for the Book at Connecticut Humanities - a state affiliate of the Library of Congress that promotes reading, writing, and Connecticut’s literary heritage. Attendees will hear about the Center’s plans for the coming year, including World Book Night, a poetry contest for teens (“Connecticut River of Words”), and local author visits.
The Honorable John B. Larson (D-1st District) will serve as the keynote speaker. Larson co-chaired the First International Summit of the Book in Washington, D.C. in 2012 – the first in an international series of gatherings that are meant to explore how the book is changing and revolutionizing knowledge and culture throughout the world.
There will also be a panel discussion – The past, present, and future of the book – to address the impact of technology on the traditional book. Panelists will include CT State Librarian Kendall Wiggin, Former CT State Poet Laureate Marilyn Nelson, and English Professor at University of Saint Joseph Dr. Kerry Driscoll; the discussion will be moderated by Connecticut Humanities Executive Director Stuart Parnes.
Additionally, the First Congressional Youth Cabinet – a group of high school students chosen by Congressman Larson to advise him on policy – will read poetry selected for the occasion.
The Connecticut Center for the Book launch will be held in the Old Judiciary Room at the Connecticut State Capital Building in Hartford on Friday, April 19th, from 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM.
