FOX News is pulling no punches in their desperate attempt to get Congressman Anthony Weiner to resign. Sean Hannity went as far as interviewing former House member and Republican Mark Foley who was forced to resign in 2006 after sending solicitous sexually charged text messages to “underage” teenage males who were then current and former Congressional pages. Is Sean Hannity serious? Trotting out a guy who was soliciting underage boys and then investigated by the FBI and law enforcement for career advice reeks of desperation.
Fox News has been parading guest after guest and FOX News commentator after commentator since the scandal began pushing for Congressman Weiner’s resignation. Interestingly enough they have yet to ask for Republican Senator David Vitter’s resignation whose name appeared on a list of “johns” that we customers at a brothel in Washington D.C. Fox seems to be overlooking the fact that Congressman Weiner didn't have sex with a prostitute which is illegal nor did he try to lure underage boys online which is illegal.
It's obvious that Congressman Weiner is not beloved by the GOP or Fox News- he’s brash, speaks his mind in their face, and battles hard on the House floor for the issues that matter to his constituency. Make no mistake that this attempt to get the congressman to resign is transparently about politics. This isn’t about lying or morals or any of the hypocrisy they are putting forth. They don't like him because he battles hard so they are trying their best to get rid of him. If the GOP and Fox were that righteous they would have asked for the resignation of Senator Vitter who did far worse.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what the morality police in Washington or at Fox News think, more than half of U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner’s constituents want him to remain in office. A survey by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion and NY1, a New York City television news station, found that 56% of registered voters in Weiner’s district say he should “not” resign, while 33% want him to quit.
Thirty percent of 9th Congressional District voters said they would definitely support the New York Democrat if he ran for re-election in 2012, and 31% said they would definitely vote against him. Almost 50% of registered voters in Weiner’s district say he can continue to be effective. The congressman has been one of the Democrats’ leading voices attacking Republican positions on health care, and fighting for the 9/11 families.
It is evident that the congressman’s constituency understands that this scandal is about a lapse in personal judgment and nothing else. Nevertheless Fox News will continue to call for his resignation but hopefully to no avail as the congressman needs to heed the call of his voters and continue to represent well.
