Newly-sworn in US Congressman Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) will be hosting a gun violence prevention forum in Santa Rosa on Thursday, January 10 (tomorrow) at 6:30 pm in the Sonoma County Supervisors' Chambers, at 575 Administration Drive.
Thompson, who represents the recently re-drawn 5th District that includes parts of Contra Costa, Lake, Solano, Napa and Sonoma Counties, is the chair of the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
On Dec 21, 2012, following the NRA's official statement advocating armed guards in public schools as an ostensible solution to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, Thompson issued the following press release:
“Everyone agrees our schools, movie theaters, shopping malls, streets and communities need to be safer. But we need a comprehensive approach that goes beyond just arming more people with more guns to make this happen.
“Closing holes in our mental health system, addressing our culture’s glorification of violence, improving background checks for everyone who buys firearms, and reinstating the ban on assault weapons and assault magazines all must be part of a comprehensive approach to reduce and prevent gun violence.”
Lest anyone jump to the conclusion that our new representative is an anti-gun fanatic conspiring to repeal the Second Amendment, Thompson's official website points out that he is "a hunter, gun owner, former chair of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, and veteran who carried a military-style assault weapon during a tour in Vietnam."
The public is invited to attend the town hall to weigh in on constructive suggestions for combating the nation's epidemic of injuries and deaths due to gun violence.
The event is free of charge, but participants are encouraged to RSVP.
