Congress votes yes to extend unemployment benefits extension - July 20, 2010

Tuesday, the US Senate in a 60-40 vote, voted to move onto the final step to extend unemployment benefits; this was the fourth attempt made by Congress over the last few months and today's vote broke the filibuster so they can move on to the final stage.

This latest extension would allow unemployment benefits to continue through the end of November. The bill will raise the deficit by $33.3 billion, and should cover approximately 2.1 million people. The original vote made just a few weeks ago did not get support from Republicans because it added to the US deficit. The No vote sparked outrage from many Americans. For more on that story and the vote, click here.

I do wonder why Senate Democrats were so adament about not cutting a budget $1 trillion more expensive then it was only 2 years ago. If they really cared about the unemployed they would have heard the first objection, made the bill stand-alone, and cut some useless spending like the $9 Billion we are giving to BP this year.

  • Regina Alexander 1 year ago

I’m glad the extension was passed, but don’t forget the 99?ers, don’t disappear, keep supporting the 99?ers

I was for extending this but they should have taken the money from somewhere else. We are bankrupting our country and many of you don't even seem to care.

Lord Jesus, thank you for the help! Thank you Congress! I headed down to the welfare office when my unemployment ended, but now I have more hope of surviving. I have 9 years education, 20 years work experience, but still I am having a difficult time finding a job. Unemployment should continue to keep this country going, without the benefits, rent, mortgage and other bills just fall behind--that is not helping the USA.

  • David 1 year ago

Hey Mikey, Just wait cause karma sucks, and just wait till your company who you worked for 10 years files bankruptcy and you have no choice and you can no longer pay your bills and keep all the extras that you have come used to having and take for granted and you are asking for help just remember don't judge. Oh, wait, let me guess you live at home, have absolutely no responsiblites and don't care about anything except your own little. Why don't you remeber that you live in America and WE help each other in a time of need.

Now I can sit home all day and drink beer...Thank you all you hard working stiffs! Thanks for your tax dollar. I will spend it on the best beer tomorrow.

  • Art 1 year ago

I just saw this passed. Mikey is right. The Welfare State is alive and well in America again. I guess the concept of need trumps anyone's right to property. And that is what this is about. The right of property. The government takes from the people who have and gives to have nots. How is this just? To steal what I have rightfully earned and give to someone else. because they need it? What is I need it? Then what? By that time the country will be bankrupt, not able to borrow another dollar from China and I'll be up the creek.

  • Great 1 year ago

Thanks all you hard working people...Thanks for your hard working tax dollar. I will be sure to spend it on the good beer tomorrow.

  • Mikey 1 year ago

David - You are not kind. Art is right. All you want is a hand out on someone else dime. I didn't tell you to get accustomed to certain lifestyle. I didn't tell you to not save for several rainy months or years. You did that all on your own. Because maybe you needed the iphone for the flat screen. See it really come down to personal responsibility. Either you can take care of yourself or you can't. Obviously you can't and you need help form my tax money. But it is a shame not being able to stand on your feet and take care of yourself. I wish you well and hope you can once again stand like a man and now cower like a mouce looking for a handout.

  • Shelly 1 year ago

You're full of it, Mikey. The majority of us have been laid of and with the economy so bad and with not enough jobs to be had, we NEED this. Maybe you should do a little more research. OUR tax dollars pay for unemployment. You can't get unemployment benefits without first having worked. God help you if you ever lose your job and need help. It won't be there for you now. Shame on you all for thinking we are asking for a hand out. We WORKED for this and now we are struggling to make ends meet. Pay attention and get your facts straight.

  • Bill 1 year ago

@ David: All we are saying is that we are tired of the welfare. People need to handle their own problems. why should my tax dollars be involved. worse yet, why should my children have to pay for your welfare. and they will.

  • Nikkole 1 year ago

Thank God it is finally passed. After I heard the news I went to the bank and got some of my own money out of my fat savings account and promptly went to the french restaurant downtown and had me a wonderful meal of foie gras, filet mignon and washed it down with a magnum of Dom Perignon. Tonight I'm having a few friends over (unemployed of course) and we are going to party like we've never partied before!!!! And that is saying something 'cause we party ALL THE TIME. Now I can go out and buy me some good s--t to smoke. And talk about booze--nothing but the best single malt for me. Happy days are SOOOOOOOOOO here again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much Dems for helping me maintain my lavish lifestyle. Tomorrow I think I will get up late , as usual, and go down to the local factory and laugh at all the people who have to work for a living. Talk about afun time!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tommy 1 year ago

Easy folks. Many of these people are looking for work but I agree there are many folks who will sit and collect. Why would you go back to work to make $400 a week when you can sit and collect $300. What's more I know several that work under the table.

  • Joke 1 year ago

paying people not to work is the worst incentive I have ever heard of.

  • Baseballgirl 1 year ago

I was currently unemployed and was cut off from unemployment like everyone else. I however don't support the 99ers, does anyone really think that with two years they couldn't find some sort of a job? I think the answer is yes, but it probably didn't pay what they were used to getting. Come on people you need to understand that none of us will find jobs with the same pay as before, so take what you can. Some money is better than no money.

  • Audy 1 year ago

You people who are against the extension of unemployment benefits are just ignorant. If you were in the unemployed person's shoes, you would feel much differently. You can get laid off at any time. Every worker is replaceable.

  • tony 1 year ago

All you f%^&ing accountants out there who are against this bill because you say it takes from you , what about all the money that I paid in over the last 31 years, I guess you think that is your money . and what about the taxes that come off of our unemployment checks , their not tax free!! 99% of you wouldnt know the difference if it raised the deficit 400 BILLION DOLLARS. This country has been in debt since the spanish american war.THATS THE AMERICAN WAY!! SO QUIT BEING DUMB!!

People who are complaining about the unemployment extension should go to hell! Yes every last one of you are acting as if you pay your taxes for the unemployed! You are hardly being taxed anything at all so quit crying about it. THAT IS WHAT WORK IS ALL ABOUT PAYING TAXES! I wish I had a job to pay taxes I'd be thankful and I would complain about taking care of people with my taxes! I admit there are some people who don't want anything out of life and would love tp stay uneployed but not everyone is that way!

  • Dee 1 year ago

FYI... You do not get umemployment benefits if you have NOT worked. Some of us have worked 20+ years and are actually getting back our tax dollars... NOT YOURS! We are not on welfare idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Holly Baldwin 1 year ago

This article is very misleading! Here is the offical word from CSpan.com web page:

The Senate approved a motion to limit debate on the unemployment insurance extension bill by a vote of 60 - 40. Senators now have up to 30 hours of debate before a final vote takes place. A final vote may come on Wednesday.

Once the bill is passed in the Senate, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said the House will then take the bill up for a final vote. The House previously approved the measure but must vote on it again because of changes made in the Senate.

If you read the article, the Senators still have to vote on the bill. This vote was just to end the filibuster.

You know, I don't like it at all taking money that I feel I haven't worked for, but, everyone tells me that I did work for it. I have worked for 38 years. I am an older citizen, and, there are sooooo many people laid off right now, that, no one wants an older person with 8 years to work before retirement before they hire someone that can work for 38 years before retirement. I don't drink beer, or any kind of alcohol, I don't smoke cigarettes, I don't do drugs of any kind. I am just someone that is trying to survive. I have the same bills as everyone else, and, I have to eat. That is where any money goes that I get. I DO NOT squander or get ANYTHING that is considered a luxury. Thank you for passing the bill. It isn't what I want to do, it is something that I need to do.... Thank you!

I must congratulate the Democrats in Congress, while they are totally devoid of leadership they do know how to lay a trap. I suppose that comes with their devious nature. The Democrats offer a bill filled with useless pork to drive us further into debt, then attach the pork to unemployment benefits, in the hope that the Republicans will reject the pork and with it the unemployment, so that the Democrats can claim that the Repubs hate the working class. Nicely done Democrats your propaganda system can no go in to over drive. Of course you will now have to figure out how to pay down this debt you have created and and since more people than ever are out of work there will be less tax revenue to do that. But anyway, good luck with your latest scam, I'd much rather have a job, but unemployment will pay the bills until November when the Repubs can begin rolling back all the idiocy of the past 18 months.

  • No Joke 1 year ago

    1) Extending the unemployment benefits until November just in time for elections? Who are the primary people supporting this extension? Democrats.

    2) For the unemployment extensions, at least require people to perform volunteer or community improvement work for 15-20 hours per week. Give back something for the money you receive.

    3) Not everyone can receive unemployment benefits who may need them. There are many people working full time jobs who may not have been laid-off, but just had their work hours reduced to less than full time. There are others who may have been working several part-time jobs, working more than 40 hours per week, who lose their jobs and are not entitled to unemployment benefits.

    4) Some people appreciate receiving the unemployment compensation, some people take advantage of the situation by not accepting a job that would pay them less.

    5) Taxes on those employed will increase once the government tries to reduce the deficit. All will pay mo

In the past I have voted for both democrats and republicans. Hoping it was for the right person. But after watching what has gone on with regards to unemployment extension and how what is being described as the party of NO. I will never vote for a republican ever again. It is appalling there lack of compassion for what is going on with the economy. I was a Salt Lake Jaycee for many years. Many times I didn't agree with the presidents agenda but I didn't try to curb his or hers administration, just because of a personal belief. Now I live in Phoenix because of a plant closing in Utah and now was laid off from the job I was working in Phoenix Arizona in November of 2009. In the last three years I have survived two plant closers and now this lay off in three western states. I don't blame the democrats either. Don't vote republococan this November. The republicans wanted to cut something to pay for the extension ask yourself what would that be, maybe medicare for an elderly parent? WHAT???
