"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge" Hosea 4:6
As the 112th congress has come into session, there was a symbolic passing of power from Nancy Pelosi to John Boehner as he was elected to be the new House Speaker. One of the first major changes that will be seen is that there will now be a reading of the United States Constitution as part of the agenda. As odd as it seems, this is going to be considered ground-breaking and has already stirred up some dissension. The Constitution is the foundation for our Country, its leaders, and its people. And yet there is an incredible lack of knowledge for its actual content.
The parallel in the modern church is a lack of knowledge of the Bible and its content. There are tens of thousands of people in church each week who have no clear understanding of scripture. And so we find ourselves in a country filled with Christians who do not know the fundamental principles for either their faith or their freedom. That deficit can be a disastrous road when it comes to preserving either of these core values.
It has been said that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. The United States of America is a country that was liberated from outside rule. The desire for independence, sovereignty and freedom were important enough to our founding fathers that they would consider their own lives and liberties forfeit in order to ensure ours. These were men who risked being tried and killed for treason in order to simply be able to stand apart as a Nation and enjoy a liberty that was, at that point, unknown. In 234 years, we now stand as a Nation with a decision to make as to whether we maintain our sovereignty, or blend into a global picture. Our economy and patriotism are equally weakened by an inability to pay our debts as we continue to go further into more and more debt. We have learned the painful lesson of what can happen when people can no longer afford their homes. What on earth can happen for a nation that cannot afford its land? Can the U.S. be foreclosed on? And, more importantly, can a return to our founding values help to transition us back to a place of prosperity and blessing?
In our country, the struggle for clear direction continues to hinge on something we often forget. That is, we are still a Nation of the people. Our individual lives impact the lives of everyone around us, all the way to Washington D.C. And so, if we are individuals who have forgotten our faith, we are a Nation that has forgotten its faith. Our individual knowledge of the scriptures will guide us as people, and our individual knowledge of the Constitution will guide us as Americans. It is our faith that led us to our freedom, and when that suffers, everything suffers along with it.
It is not enough to have our leaders start to understand these founding documents, just as our Pastors and Priests cannot be responsible for our personal walk with God. It is the responsibility of each of us to read, pray and act on that which can lead to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. May that challenge us all to understand where we came from, and help to dictate where we will end up. Inevitably, a life lived close to God is the only life worth living.
Be blessed, everyone who has stopped by today. Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated. Take care to understand why you do what you do. Tune in again next week as we continue to share in this great gift called life. Until then, God bless and keep reading!
