Very quietly, the US Congress has authorized shipments of weaponry be sent to the so-called "moderate rebels" in the Free Syrian Army (FSA), as reported by the Reuters news agency via The Jerusalem Post on Jan. 28, 2014.
In one of the few bi-partisan agreements reached in Washington, DC, Democrats lined up behind Barack Obama while Republicans aligning themselves with John McCain all agree that American taxpayer money pay for weapons and other military equipment should be shipped to the FSA.
All happening behind closed doors, anonymous American and European security officials verified Congress approved various small arms as well as shoulder fired anti-tank weapons be provided to the FSA, which operates mainly in the south of Syria.
With more than just a slight chequered past, Middle East watchers and military-minded experts can't help but wondering if the United States is backing a loser in the FSA.
May 8, 2013...
Britain's The Guardian noted on May 8, 2013 that the FSA is "losing fighters and capabilities" to the al-Qaeda-allied al-Nusra Front, one of the more savage Islamic Jihad terrrorist groups.
FSA leaders have reported that "entire units have gone over to al-Nusra while others have lost a quarter or more of their strength to them recently."
The Guardian opined that al-Nusra also happens to be "emerging as the best-equipped, financed and motivated force" operating in Syria.
September 12, 2013...
Far from ever being accused of being a den of right-wing extremism, NBC News reported four months ago "the difficulty determining where the FSA’s sympathies lie resides in the fact that it is an army in name only."
Not done yet with their critique, they also added, "It is made up of hundreds of small units, some secular, some religious – whether mainstream or radical. Others are family gangs, or simply criminals."
December 31, 2013...
ForeignPolicy.com reported as recently as Dec. 31, 2013 that the FSA "has been growing weaker by the day."
Nonetheless, Barack Obama and John McCain mustered enough votes in Congress to send an undisclosed amount of money's worth from the US Treasury to the FSA, which is figuratively teetering on the edge of total collapse as an effective and cohesive fighting force.
Must be big Janis Joplin fans...
The FSA is best known to many Westerners when one of their members was filmed eating the heart of a recently killed government soldier.
Reportedly, the FSA rebel bragged to the camera:
I swear to allah we will eat your hearts out.
