Congratulations to Steve Ward for designing the winning 2012 convention poster

In the last week, DNC officials announced that Steve Ward, a Charlotte area local, is the winner of the poster contest. Of the four finalists, all were from Charlotte. Mr. Ward has been an instructor of digital design at York Technical College since 2008 and earned his degree in graphic design from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Anthony Foxx said in a video, “A few months ago we asked you to submit designs for one of the official convention posters. With over 400 submissions and more than 26,000 votes from all over the country, I am proud to announce today that you picked a winner from right here in Charlotte.”

“Urban Unity” as the poster is being called, was designed to celebrate diversity. We all have different political, economic, and religious views, but that's what makes this country so special. Too often political arenas are used to shun other's way of thinking and promote their own. We should all come together, unified, with ears and minds open.

According to WSOC TV Ward had said, "I titled it 'Urban Unity,' so the coming together, so I really wanted to play on that, and have different elements, the colors, the contrast, everything coming together as a cohesive unit." In a separate interview Ward told The Charlotte Observer that, “his design Urban unity, combines his love of Charlotte (the poster features the city’s skyline) with images of clasping hands to show the important of people coming together for a common cause. The idea was to create something that had a distinctly positive message and says something about unity, even in what is a political setting, which can be so divisive.”

The poster is 18” x 24” and $25 each from the Charlotte in 2012 website store. Ward will get to sell his poster during the months leading up to the convention in September, and according to WSOC TV will receive $1 for every piece sold.
