Former Second City Mainstage actor and Saturday Night Live writer Michael Patrick O'Brien will be joining the cast of the show as a featured player this fall, according to the network. O'Brien was hired as a writer for SNL in 2009. He is one of five new cast members added for the upcoming season, the largest influx of new talent of the longtime sketch comedy show since 1995.
O'Brien was a Chicago improv scene staple, performing a both iO and SC. He also hosts the web series, "& Minutes in Heaven" where he conducts celebrity interviews in a closet. O'Brien is the first SNL writer to be promoted to cast member since Jason Sudeikis in 2005. Tina Fey served as the first female head writer of SNL before being promoted to cast member in 2000. They've both done pretty well since.
O'Brien also holds the fairly meaningless distinction of being the first profile for this column, but it's not a bad read.
