The Alabama Department of Corrections began donating its confiscated cellphones to a domestic violence program, which is supported by the sate’s governor. Last year the Alabama Department of Corrections donated nearly 2,500 confiscated cellphones and more than 1,500 so far this year. The donated phones are given to HopeLine from Verizon, a recycling program. The phones are refurbished and sold to help fund grants for non-profit organizations (Alabama-Birmingham News, 8/28/2013).
