Confirmed: Philip Seymour Hoffman cast in 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'

Lionsgate confirmed Monday morning that Philip Seymour Hoffman has been cast as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the upcoming sequel to this year's smash-hit, The Hunger Games.

Hoffman is the first new cast member to officially be announced for Catching Fire. His involvement was rumored earlier this summer, but the deal has finally been inked and his casting is confirmed.

Hoffman's character is the new Head Gamemaker for the Hunger Games in Catching Fire, and though a relatively small role in the books, his part is significant. In particular, he shares a very key scene with heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), which plays a key role in unraveling the secrets of the Hunger Games arena in Catching Fire.

Other highly anticipated casting announcements for Catching Fire include the characters Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason -- and while no official word has come for either role, it's been rumored that Jena Malone is in talks for the latter.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is set for release on November 22, 2013. Returning cast members include Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, and Woody Harrelson. Filming is set to begin later this year.
