2010 World champion Aliya Mustafina will make her comeback on bars and beam at this weekend's Stuttgart World Cup, while 2011 World floor champ Ksenia Afanasyeva was not able to make the trip to Germany after all due to visa problems.
Mustafina was cleared to compete after a visit to Dr. Michael Strobel, the Munich surgeon who operated on her knee last spring following her ACL tear at the European Championships, on Tuesday. She and the Russian delegation arrived in Stuttgart on Wednesday.
"I called the [Russian] head coach today, and he confirmed that the doctor gave her the green light for competition," German men's coach Valeri Belenki told the press Wednesday afternoon in Stuttgart.
Afanasyeva, who was scheduled to compete in the all-around portion of the World Cup, will be replaced either by Yulia Inshina or Yulia Belokobylskaya. The Russians will decide who competes tomorrow morning.
Afanasyeva isn't the only gymnast being replaced in the women's all-around final. Celine van Gerner, who underwent foot surgery this week, will be replaced by teammate Marlies Rijken, while Australia's Emily Little is stepping in for Lauren Mitchell.
Here's an updated schedule and list of competitors. Competition times are Stuttgart time. The World Cup will be streamed online at www.swr.de.
