A confession is a statement made by a person acknowledging some personal fact that the person would prefer to keep hidden. The term is generally associated with an admission of a moral or legal wrong.
Confession really is good for the soul.
There are also other benefits of having confessed an immoral or illegal act.
Confession must come before forgiveness. While forgiveness is available for any sin, it isn't automatic. You must ask God for forgiveness for every sin you commit. Confess your sins as they happen. Do not wait until your sins pile up and you lump them all in one confession.
Confession must come before true worship. You cannot honestly enjoy true worship with God if we are holding onto some sin. Confession clears the way for real fellowship with other believers. You cannot have right relationship with God or true fellowship with other believers until you are free from unconfessed sin.
Confession must come to have true freedom. Whenever you confess your sin, a burden is lifted from you and you immediately feel a sense of freedom. When you ask God to forgive you, He will. When you live with unconfessed sin, you will always be filled with guilt, shame, humiliation, and condemnation. Confessed sin will set you free.
What happens when you confess your sin?
The answer is quite simple. According to the Bible, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)
