Confectionery Excursions: Candy Tours in the Chicagoland area

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and people are searching for unique ways to impress that special someone. Whether your Valentine is a significant other, close friend or family member, treat them to an adventure at a local candy company or shop. You and your guests will be mesmerized by the sights and smells of melt-in-your mouth goodies, not to mention, being educated about the local history of Chicagoland area confectioneries.

Long Grove Confectionery began in 1975 in the historic northern suburb of Long Grove, IL. Under the direction of John Mangel II and his wife Heidi, they began manufacturing assorted chocolate candies to sell to the public and other businesses. Set aside some time to visit their 85,000 square foot facility and afterwards purchase some delicacies to take home. The company gives one-hour tours Tuesday-Thursday 10am-12 noon with reservations. Weekday tours are $2.00 per person. If you’re watching your budget this Valentine’s Day, check out the free tours on Saturdays 10am-3pm. Groups leave on the hour so don’t be late!

Chicago Chocolate Tours is the brainchild of Valerie Beck, a former attorney and lover of all things chocolate. Valerie’s passionate and knowledgeable team will take you on a 2 ½ hour guided walking tour of Chicago’s well-known shops along with a few hidden gems in the Chocolate world. You’ll work up an appetite to taste many of the rich offerings on hand while learning about the history of chocolate. Public tours are $40 with group rates available. Private tours are $50.

If a Chicago walking tour in February is not your “cup of tea”, stay warm and toasty by checking out Morkes Chocolates in Palatine or Algonquin. Morkes has a long-standing family history of making premium quality chocolate items that appeal to all ages. Take your family or group of friends to enjoy a party making chocolate pizza, pretzels, fondue or truffles. Morkes also caters special events and organizational outings providing a fun alternative for group indulgence!
