St. Claude Avenue is growing into a bohemian Mecca with several cutting edge art galleries, the newly opened Healing Center and contemporary performance theatres. Located on the edge of Bywater, the Shadow Box Theater is a small space that provides an intimate experience. If you have not had the opportunity to enjoy a performance at the Shadow Box Theatre, then Jose Torres-Tama performance piece “Cone of Uncertainty: New Orleans after Katrina” is good reason to go.
The New York performance artist Jose Torres-Tama moved to New Orleans prior to Katrina and ended up evacuating in a stolen school bus with famed musician Allan Toussaint aboard. That experience is relived in his moving, intense and dramatic performance piece. Born in Ecuador, Torres-Tama addresses the influx of Hispanic population in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, who did the dirty work of cleaning out our soggy mud and mold filled homes. The multi-media experience artfully incorporates video by William Sabourin O’Reilly and original music by Bill Atwell.
The Shadowbox Theater is located at 2400 St. Claude Avenue, and for additional information call 504-298-8676 or www.shadowboxtheatre.com. Tickets are $10 and street parking is available, so just be careful. Performances run from Thursday, September 8 to Sunday September 11, 2011
