Condo knitting (Photos)

Condo knitting was popular from the late 1970's to the early 1980's. This lacy technique was used to make quick work of an afghan, scarf, top or vest. The type of yarn helps to bring the finished piece to life. Novelty yarns or several strands of various yarns, knit together help create the look.

What makes this technique is the choice of needle sizes. You use two totally different size needles. An example might be size 7 and size 15. The resulting knit had a tight row followed by a loose (lacy) row.

There are two different ways to accomplish the stitch. One way is using one of each size needle and knit the entire item. Another way is to knit several inches using one size needle and then with two larger needles for a determined number of rows. The result would be a lacy stripe and tighter stripe.

You still may come across a circular needle with each end having a different size needle at a tag sale. Garter stitch is what is usually knit. The stitch this technique of knitting most closely resembles is the "Dropped stitch". The photographs for these patterns are in the slideshow.
