Condo City - What does this mean for Toronto's singles?

Hello Again Toronto,

For us native Torontonians who have lived in or around the city for any period of time, we've noticed a change. Our city has grown up. Relax Toronto, I'm not calling you old, I'm calling you tall. You're far more vertical than you were when I was growing up. I don't remember there being this many condominiums when I was taking my bus trips here to the ROM or Queen's Park in the '90s. The Toronto housing market is saturated with Condos and Apartment Buildings - that's what we'll be looking at today.

Not too long ago, I was having a chat with an acquaintance and he opened my eyes to something new. Something that I had never heard of happening before. Something that some of you may think of as all kinds of awesome. A pick-up in the lobby of his condo. It's irrelevant whether or not he was picking up or being picked up - what I found interesting is that this happened. I won't mention which of Toronto's condo developments he lives in, that doesn't matter either - what matters is that it happened. Have I mentioned that I'm a little shocked that it happened?

After speaking with this bloke, I pondered the pros and cons of this very new to me social activity. Let's consider this from the several potential outcomes of a "pick-up" :

(Aside: going forward I'll say "meeting" in all of my articles, since the thought of "picking-up" is not all that positive, you pick up trash, you pick up after your dog makes a mess, you pick up after those darned kids leave their toys all over the living room.... none of these imply fun in any way, shape or form - so we'll say "meeting". Got it? Good.)

Now back to our original thought, consider the potential outcomes of the condo lobby "meeting":

  1. the one-night hookup (let's not be naive folks, we're all grown) PRO: Your walk of shame is very short, you don't even have to go outside. CON: Your walk of shame is very short, you don't even have to go outside
  2. the less than 5 date relationship (you went out a couple of times...but just didn't click)
PRO: You still get to be "friends" after you decide it's not working - since you'll be seeing each other in that same lobby that you had your initial "meeting" until one of you moves. CON: You still get to be "friends" after you decide it's not working - since you'll be seeing each other in that same lobby that you had your initial "meeting" until one of you moves.
  3. the more than 5 date relationship - but not quite long term (does this need more explanation?)
PRO: You now have a reason to start looking for a new place. CON: You now have a reason to start looking for a new place.
  4. the long term relationship (Toronto, I know you're thinking that this isn't likely, but lets entertain it, let's try to be hopeless romantics for a moment) PRO: A very easy transition to living together and wedded bliss.... since you've been at each others' place 5-7 times a week anyway CON: A very easy transition to living together and wedded bliss.... since you've been at each others' place 5-7 times a week anyway. Why is this a CON? Because, neither of you will be able to use the excuse (and we've all heard it) "I never knew what it was like living with him/her" if things don't work out.

That said Toronto, the condo lobby "meeting" can either be a positive or a negative. I suppose it all depends on if you're the "glass half empty" or the "glass half full" type. Or, as was in the case of my friend - it could be a plus plus plus.... if the lady or gent from your "meeting" is just visiting for the day, evening, weekend and doesn't live in the building at all.

Keep an eye out for a hottie in a condo lobby near you...
