Conditions worsening by the minute at Virginia spaceport

NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia is providing updates from their East Coast location on Twitter, reporting at 3 p.m. EDT on Saturday, “conditions are worsening here by the minute," as Hurricane Irene makes her way north.

NASA Wallops reports on Twitter that 8.6 inches of rain have fallen at the main base with winds reaching 65 miles per hour (mph).

Wallops is the oldest active launch range in the continental United States and the only range completely under NASA management.

For over 65 years, Wallops has flown thousands of research vehicles in the quest for information on the characteristics of airplanes, rockets, and spacecraft, and to increase the knowledge of the Earth's upper atmosphere and the near space environment.

Many of Wallops’ primary launch support facilities reside on Wallops Island which is located directly on the Atlantic Ocean.

Reports from NASA Wallops on Twitter:

2 p.m. - from Emergency Operations Center (EOC): winds increasing, now average 45 mph. Rain is now seven inches on main base. Still no overwash on the island.
