Las Vegas – With all the hype surrounding a possible George St-Pierre versus Nick Diaz fight, one man stood in the way, Carlos Condit. Last night at UFC 143 Carlos Condit met Nick Diaz for the interim welterweight championship.
In the weeks leading up to the fight most of the questions from the media were questions about a potential fight with Georges St-Pierre almost to the point that it was like a foregone conclusion that Diaz would win and go on to meet GSP.
Former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit made other arrangements. Following a solid five round fight Condit won a unanimous decision to become the interim welterweight championship.
Condit did a tremendous job of employing his strategy of keeping Diaz at bay with kicks and keeping his back away from the cage. Diaz had early success winning the first two rounds but it was Condit who controlled the fight in the final three rounds.
An overwhelmed Condit had this to say following the fight, "It's pretty surreal, I couldn't have done it without my coaches. I did what they told me, and I walked away with the victory.”
This was Condit’s 5th win in a row and he will now look to set his eyes on Georges St-Pierre in a title unification bout that is likely to take place in November. However, Condit’s manager did say earlier this week that should Condit win; he may not want to wait until November to fight again.
