It was March 18, 2005 and I had just finished my conversation with an enrollment advisor from Capella University in reference to advancing my learning. The only thing I remember from that specific day (to paraphrase) was, “Congratulations, you are now enrolled in Capella’s Professional Studies in Education doctoral program.” I thought to myself- What had I just done? What had I just gotten myself into? I work full-time, I have a husband, and in the process of raising two small girls (at that time- ages 1 and 3). I wondered what in the hell was I thinking…and how would I ever be able to pull something like this off. How would I be able to balance and maintain my family life, work, and schooling? Although I had graduated with an MBA in 2000, I was without children. Now five years later, I was about to enter an educational doctoral program that would require extreme sacrifices and diligence. Moreover, I had determined to leave my MBA and enter the world of the unknown…the world of education. All of my prior degrees or concentrations were either in business or human resources and now I was trying to determine how I could utilize a doctoral degree in education as a conduit to further my profession.
Within six years I embarked on a journey through some of the greatest thoughts and ideas concerning education, from some of the greatest philosophers, psychologist and educators in history. Along my educational passage I was introduced to Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Albert Bandura, Maria Montessori, Ivan Pavlov, Sigmund Freud, Lev Vygotsky, John Dewey, Carl Rogers, B.F. Skinner, Jean Piaget, Malcolm Knowles, John lock, Jean Jacques Rousseau…just to name a few. Furthermore, I was also introduced to the intricacies of human learning (metacognition)…determining how learning occurs and when it occurs. As you can see, learning is the means through which we acquire knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and emotional reactions. And this is the purpose of this platform. This is a platform to share information pertinent to adult learning without restrictions. So, whether you are entering post-secondary, a technical program, or receiving a high school equivalency…this podium is for you. It is a platform for you to examine whilst providing remarks about your current stance with education. If you are a learner currently pursuing instruction.....how are you managing….and how do you balance your world?
