Conan O’Brien will put on a different hat from that of talk show host and comedian October 25. Apparently the spontaneous host will pick up a microphone at Santa Anita this Friday. For a while his impulsive wit will be tested in an entirely different way.
Gone will be his desk and his comfort zone on the late-night talk show set. Instead, O’Brien will sit in front of a strange microphone at a racetrack where he’ll be watching colors and color patterns, numbers, jockeys, and the everchanging blur of speeding horses. He’ll have to memorize the silks, eyeball the runners and the jockeys and be quick-witted and call the race.
Since Conan O’Brien is used to “thinking on his feet,” he’ll excel at this and maybe even have heaps of fun.
Long-time expert track announcer Trevor Denman will show O’Brien the ropes of calling a race and then the race-call trainee/funny man will be mostly on his own in front of a live audience who may have some pretty heavy dollars riding along with the horses. After all, O’Brien is voicing the second race at Santa Anita, the big-time host track for November’s Breeders’ Cup.
Denman already has his advice prepared for O'Brien. It’s this,
Keep it simple and try and have fun with it.
There’s not much doubt about it. If he keeps it funny, O’Brien will take that microphone and have a blast.
