In a very funny recap of his Social Media prowess, Conan O'Brien announced that he has been wildly successful on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube, but he had yet to master or dominate LinkedIn. In fact, no celebrity has taken to the airwaves or made an offensive move to "dominate" LinkedIn.
Conan admits in his segment that he doesn't even know what LinkedIn is for, but he wants to be the celeb to dominate it.
This is a great move for Conan and LinkedIn. I reached out and asked to connect to Conan today. He had all of 42 followers/connections on LinkedIn when I sent the request. Within an hour of my request, I received a notice that the CEO of Conan has indeed accepted my link request and we are now connected. Within an hour, Conan had over 7,200 connections.
Conan's people are obviously running the show and might just break LinkedIn. A few of his settings are not quite right. One of his "problems" is that his connection list is wide open. Any of his connections can see one another. This is a bit of a problem because the idea behind LinkedIn is that when you want to connect with someone, you ask a real person that you know for an introduction. If all of LinkedIn connects with Conan, we will all be 1 degree connection away. We will all be able to see each others profiles and details, which goes against what LinkedIn wants us all to do. In fact, they charge subscribers a lot of money to see everyone's profile.
If we are all connected, the 5M or so people on LinkedIn, then the business model has a bit of a problem. Most celebrities only ask that people "Follow" their updates and not connect with them. This is indeed new territory for the network and the late night funnyman.
This will be great to see it play out. People have already endorsed Conan for his humor and his mastery of Excel.
