A pair of con men posing as alarm system company employees have robbed several senior citizens in the Denver area over the past month. The scam is expected to be copied in other areas, leading authorities to issue warnings to anyone with an alarm system.
The men pose as alarm system service technicians claiming problems with alarm panels in the area. The men knock on doors where an alarm company flag is present, claiming to be from that company. They move around the house, pretending to check sensors on doors and windows, as well as examining key panels.
Instead of repairs, the two steal cash, jewelry, credit cards, and other valuables.
A recent victim had her wallet stolen during a home visit by the scammers. Her husband forced the pair to leave the house when he returned home. They promised to return a few days later, but did not. A phone call to the alarm company exposed the scam.
The scam begins by finding a home with a flag from an alarm company in a yard. Customers are encouraged to remove brand identifying flags from their homes to deter scammers from targeting their home with this particular con.
Anyone who has an unexpected visit from people claiming to be from an alarm company should refuse to allow them to enter. Contact the alarm company to verify a home visit has been scheduled and authorized.
If the technicians are unexpected or seem suspicious, contact law enforcement.
