Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) refers to any medical intervention used in place of, or in junction with, traditional western medicine. Although these natural remedies or healing procedures may seem unusual to those who depend on traditional medicine, their use dates back to ancient times.
According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey (NCIS) 75 percent of adults over the age of 18 participated in complementary or alternative medicine in the 12 months before the survey. Alternative and complementary medicines included: alternative medical systems – namely acupuncture, ayurveda, homeopathy and naturopathy; biologically based therapies – such as diet, folk medicine and vitamin therapy; body based therapies - including chiropractic care and massage; and mind-body therapies - such as meditation, relaxation, breathing, healing energy and prayer.
