Now that 2012 has come and gone, a new season of competitive gaming is about to be underway. Korea's Infiltration started the year off known as one of the best players in his country, he ended it as arguably the most successful player of the year financially. Not only did he win the Super Street Fighter 4 AE 2012 tournament at the Evolution Fighting Game Championships, he also came back at the end of the year Capcom 25th Anniversary to win SSF4 and Street Fighter X Tekken to win another $50,000 and a new car.
Major League Gaming brought fighting games back in a big way by holding big prizes for Mortal Kombat 9, King of Fighters 13, Soul Calibur 5, Sony Playstation All Stars, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. IGN Pro League made the huge announcement of SSF4 and SFxT making their debuts in the 2013 season. 2012 also saw a bumper crop of fighting games come out, starting with the update for SSF4, SFxT, SC5, Skull Girls, Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive 5, and TTT2.
MLG has yet to announce their 2013 lineup, but are expected to add new fighting games in addition to their popular titles Starcraft 2, League of Legends, and Halo 4. Evo should be announcing their game lineup later this month, thus beginning the grass roots tournament circuit. Players in Houston can look forward to Texas Showdown Championships making its return in mid April and being helmed by the duo who started the event, Chris Chou and Javi Moreno.
So if 2012 lit your fuse for tournament play, or reinvigorated your competitive fire, look for that to continue with an exciting 2013.
