When Jake Thompson launched his new apparel line, Compete Every Day, he understood that competing is a lifestyle for those who refuse to stand idle.
What began as motivational messages on T-shirts and wristbands has fast become an online community where people post their own inspirational stories and comment on public events (rookie quarterbacks, start-up success, etc.). The T-shirts with clever sayings like "Slay Your Giant", "Because I Haven't Found My Limit" (see photo slide show) are worn by professional athletes and during company team-building events.
Thompson believes the appeal of the Compete Every Day apparel line is because inside all of us is a desire to succeed and compete for what we want.
Below are Jake Thompson's tips for team building success in 2013.
1. Clear communication. Each team member must understand their importance in the overall growth of the brand and organization. Sometimes this can be forgotten by the individual in the day-to-day activities so it is important to give reminders – through email, phone call, or a simple note.
2. Share why they matter. Take time to show how each team member’s actions and output directly impacts and helps the brand's community. This is especially important to our brand for individuals in our team who do not have as much contact day to day with the online or offline audience – we want to show them how what they do directly impacts our customers' lives.
3. Encourage & applaud. Make sure you step back to let your teams produce independently but don't abandon them. Touch base, address obstacles, and encourage and applaud short & long-term goals as they are met.
