Yogacharya Ellen Grace O'Brian, founder and Spiritual Director of the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment in San Jose, will be one of the keynote speakers at Peace Forum 2013 this coming Sunday, September 8, 2013. She will be speaking on "Compassion is the Key to Peace," and will be joined by Professor David McGaffey of Berkeley, whose topic will be "Swords into Plowshares, Enemies into Friends." Peace Forum 2013 will begin at 1:15 pm at the Pacific School of Religion, 2401 Le Conte Ave, Berkeley.
The Forum, inspired in part by the United Nations Day of Peace on September 21, is free for any interested people. Donations will be gratefully accepted.
In addition to the keynote talks, special music, interactive workshops and breakout discussions will round out the event. Rev. Paul Chaffee, Editor of the e-journal The Interfaith Observer, will close with a synthesis of the day's reflections.
Workshop sessions will include “Avoiding Violence: Values & Practices to Change Organizational & National Behaviors,” “Conflict Resolution: Practice and Principles,” “United Nations:Hopes and Realities About Peace,” “Talking Back to Hate–Mobilizing Young Passion for Peace,” and “Replacing Aggression with Compassion: A Psychological and Spiritual Approach.”
Organizers include AHIMSA, InterConsultUSA, Pacifica Institute–East Bay Chapter, Shift Network, Universal Peace Federation, United Nations Assoc.—East Bay, The New Spirit Community Church, and Women’s Interfaith Circle of Service–URI-CC, with sponsorship and support from interreligious groups around the Bay Area.
