Two and a half weeks after Boise State left its Big East/Big West deal, San Diego State has done the same, announcing that it will rejoin the Mountain West Conference (or just not leave as it had planned to do on July 1, 2013).
But after listening to press conferences, teleconferences and reading reports, it seems that the Aztecs return to the MW was more volatile than Boise State’s.
And if it wasn’t for a stipulation put into the Broncos, SDSU may still be in the limbo known as the Big East.
(It was stipulated that if Boise State returned to the Mountain West first, then the conference had to invite the Aztecs before inviting any other schools.)
But, there’s no doubt that the Broncos may have gotten the sweeter end of the deal and that San Diego State is just riding off their coat (or horse) tails.
Here’s a breakdown of both deals.
Boise State deal (info from the Idaho Statesman):
- Boise State home football games will be negotiated separately from the rest of the conference, meaning CBS Sports Network will not have first option on Broncos home football games. This gives Boise State and edge on TV money, because the re-negotiated MW TV deal will give any Mountain West team that appears on a national network outside of CBS Sports Network (ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, FOX or NBC) an addition $300,000 per game, plus $200,000 for every game played on Saturday.
- The Mountain West will pay up to $3 million in Boise State’s exit fees from the Big East and Big West.
- Boise State will receive its share of conference revenue ($2.5 million) for the 2012-2013 season which it had forfeited when agreeing to join the Big East.
- Boise State’s digital rights will be retained by the university until April 1, 2018.
- Boise State’s uniforms will not be regulated by the conference.
San Diego State deal:
- SDSU does not need to pay the Big East an exit fee, but does have to pay $1.5 million to the Big West, which the MW will not pay for.
- SDSU will receive its share of conference revenue ($2.5 million) for the 2012-2013 season which it had forfeited when agreeing to join the Big East.
- The CBS Sports Network will have first option on all SDSU home games, but the Aztecs (just like every other team in the conference) can have games placed on an additional network if CBS passes on the Aztecs home games.
- MW commissioner Craig Thompson said that “All of San Diego State’s television rights are part of the Mountain West package.” This means that, unlike Boise State, the Aztecs will not be able to independently sell its rights to any games. With the Big West, SDSU had the opportunity to sell its home basketball games to any network.
