Today’s company spotlight is on TimeBack Management and its founder and president, Dan Markovitz. TimeBack Management is a business consulting firm that specializes in efficiency training. The firm applies the principles of Lean manufacturing to the business practices and tasks of knowledge workers. The concept of the Lean principles is to eliminate steps that do not add value, so that a company can create more with less.

Dan Markovitz founded TimeBack Management in 2005. He draws on a background of corporate management, entrepreneurship, and teaching. Before founding TimeBack, Dan held managerial positions at Sierra Designs, Adidas, CNET, and Asics Tiger. He also founded an athletic footwear company, and was nominated for the prestigious Disney Teacher of the Year award for his work as an English teacher. Dan is a faculty member of the Lean Enterprise Institute and a regular contributor to Evolving Excellence, the Lean Blog, and the New York Enterprise Report. Among his other expertise, he speaks, reads, and writes Japanese, and enjoys coaching high school cross-country as well as cooking.

What gave you the idea to start this business?

A friend introduced me to the idea. And after working for years in companies where I was always one of the first to go home at night, I realized that I work differently – more efficiently – than most people. It seemed like a great skill to pass on.

Why is the company successful?

I take a unique approach to time management. I apply the principles and techniques from Toyota’s Lean manufacturing to individual work. People don’t just learn tips for better time management; they learn how to create sustainable change in their organizations to make things better for everyone.

I provide people with a 13-month year. Which is to say, that I help people eliminate the waste in their day so that they’re spending time on the stuff that’s important to them.

What words of advice do you have for business owners?

Time is your only truly irreplaceable resource. Use it wisely.

What are your top five tips to thrive in these tough economic times?

1. Don’t be driven by your e-mail inbox.
2. Make time for what’s important--both work and personal.
3. Figure out your value proposition.
4. Learn to create marketing gravity.
5. Learn to sell.
