Community supported agriculture in Waco

For people who do not have the time, money or space to manage their own garden but still want to eat organically and locally, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is an affordable alternative.

Farmers who participate in CSAs sell part of their harvest, usually weekly, to customers who have paid a subscription fee. Most participating farmers have a one time fee. Then, produce is paid for weekly through the growing season. Usually CSAs deliver, sometimes to a neutral location.

Sand Creek Farm in Milam, County operates a CSA program. There is a one time fee of twenty five dollars and each weekly share is thirty five dollars.

There are four ways to receive the food.

1. Pick up from the farm.

2. Join a group that has a driver or takes turns driving.

3. Join a group that has a delivery on their route.

4. Start a group.

A share is a variety of 6-10 vegetables that is enough for a family of four.

In Waco, group members take turns driving to the farm on the fourth Saturday of each month. In Temple, the group has a paid driver that goes to the farm bi-weekly. In Belton, there is a host for pick up.

CSA programs are a great way to get organic vegetables that are not GM and are chemical fee. The program also supports local farmers.
