CSA Utah supports local farmers’ who are part of the community supported agriculture (CSA) movement. More than 30 local farmers participate in CSAs bringing fresh, local food to people in the Salt Lake area.
To join a CSA, members of the community pay for a share of what is grown before the growing season begins. They then receive a box of fresh fruits and vegetables weekly, depending on what is harvested.
“You never know what you’re going to get,” says Therese Meyer, Chair of the Greater Salt Lake Resource Conservation and Development Council.
The benefits of joining a CSA include:
- Local farmers – “It’s keeping local land in agricultural production,” says Meyer.
- Smaller carbon footprint
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Make healthier food choices
- Local jobs
Even though CSA Utah has lost all of its government funding at the national level, Meyer encouraged people to support the farmers.
“Buy shares. It’s really about the farmers,” she says. “They’re the mainstay.”
CSA Utah will be holding an open house for people to meet the farmers who participate in a CSA program on Feb. 23, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wheeler Farms. Shares may be purchased at that time.
