According to EW, which first broke the news Tuesday (Aug. 20), the actor will appear in 11 episodes of the upcoming fifth season as Pat Nichols, an intense criminology professor at Greendale who has a shady past in military and police work.
His first appearance will be in the second episode of the 13-episode season, when Annie (Alison Brie) enrolls in his class.
Banks played hitman Mike Ehrmantraut for four seasons on AMC's critically acclaimed drama "Breaking Bad," a role for which he recently earned a Supporting Actor Emmy nomination. He also guest starred on "Parks and Recreation" last season as Ben's (Adam Scott) dad.
The 66-year-old actor follows in the footsteps of his former "Breaking Bad" co-star Giancarlo Esposito, who previously guest starred in several episodes of "Community."
In other "Community" news, TV Line is reporting that Rob Corddry will reprise his role as Jeff's (Joel McHale) law-firm buddy Alan Connor in the NBC comedy's season opener. The character is expected to be involved in Jeff's return to the community college, following his recent graduation.
