This week, Utahns for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (UTADP) sought support for putting an end to the death penalty in the state. The group had a strategy session this week to discuss possible options and how to move forward.
This comes just two months after Ronnie Lee Gardner was executed by firing squad at the state prison in Draper, Utah.
A Salt Lake City public defender, Ralph Dellapiana began to organize the group last year. He said that in the long run the cost of a death penalty case is more expensive than life in prison.
“We want a system that is faster, cheaper and serves the needs of victims better,” said Dellapiana, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. “Having life without parole being the maximum sentence achieves all of those goals.”
