After his impressive victory over Michael Katsidis last night, the cry for a trilogy between Juan Manuel Marquez and nemesis Manny Pacquiao grew louder especially from within his Mexican fan base. With Floyd Mayweather Jr. still MIA and facing a plethora of legal hurdles, there really aren't a lot of intriguing match-ups available for Pacquiao at this moment.
Shane Mosley appears to be the leading candidate in Top Rank promoter Bob Arum's list. When I caught up with Mosley during the post-fight press conference of Pacquiao-Margarito, he mentioned that he, together with his new advisor James Prince, have been in contact with Top Rank regarding a clash with Pacquiao. Mosley also stated that he would be doing the fight by himself and without Richard Schaeffer and GoldenBoy Promotions who have had a long and much-publicized dispute with Top Rank.
For Golden Boy to push a third fight between Pacquiao and Marquez right now serves more purposes and motives to them aside from the obvious which is money. It would be GBP's way to stick it up to Mosley who has long been dying to face Pacquiao and cash-in on the fortunes that come with it.

Several hardcore boxing fans have expressed their disapproval over Pacquiao-Mosley and honestly, I concur. Mosley however is still one of the more recognizable names in the sport and is an easier sell than Antonio Margarito. In Pacquiao's financial interest, it would also be more lucrative to fight Mosley than Marquez since he wouldn't have to share a percentage of his earnings to GBP due to Mosley's independent status.
After talks between Pacquiao and Mayweather fell through the first time back in January, Marquez took himself out of the equation by allegedly demanding a 50-50 split with Pacquiao and Olympic-style drug testing similar to Mayweather. Also, Marquez dismissed Pacquiao's recent successes against bigger opponents like Cotto, Clottey and Margarito saying that they were 'washed-up' fighters while Marquez has fought people the same size as him in their primes like Diaz and Katisidis. For the record, I say any of the 3 previous Pacquiao opponents would destroy any one of Marquez's recent opponents not named Mayweather. They are also all younger than Marquez by at least 4 years.
How badly does Marquez really want a third fight with Pacquiao? How realistic is his chance of winning? Marquez wore a shirt that said 'Marquez beat Pacquiao twice' during his post-fight press conference against Katsidis. Truth is, those two fights could've gone either way and if not for the four knockdowns Marquez gave up, he would've clearly won both fights. Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Fact remains, he drew with Pacquiao the first time thanks to a scoring error commited by one of the judges that worked to Marquez's advantage, and lost a close split the second time around. I saw Pacquiao closely winning both fights after reviewing the fights several times.
His fight Saturday drew only a little over 5,000 people at the MGM Grand, a place that Pacquiao sells out regardless of who he fights. Pacquiao has also been campaigning at 147 in his last 3 fights, so if Marquez expects Pacquiao to go down to 135 to challenge him, then he is simply playing himself.

With all those things out of the way, here's what I say:
I believe there is indeed a market and demand for this trilogy. It has drama and history and even Pacquiao fans want to see it happen again, if not to see a competitive fight, but simply to see their idol shut up Marquez once and for all. Mexican fans will eat this up. A lot of them truly believe Marquez beat Pacquiao twice. Do I think this will necessarily sell more than Pacquiao fighting Mosley? Not necessarily. Mosley still has more mainstream appeal and people would love to see how he would do against Pacquiao since he had just recently fought Mayweather. Mosley is bigger and stronger too. Not to mention, for those who subscribe to the Bernard Hopkins line of thinking, Mosley is an African-American boxer as well.
I truly believe Pacquiao will annihilate Marquez in a third fight like he did Morales and seeing him get knocked down on his ass in the third round by Katsidis didn't help in changing my opinion either. I am so sure of that outcome that I am willing to bet everything I own on it. That's me though (If the fight happens, contact me if you want to bet on Marquez if you think I'm kidding). There are people still though that think Marquez has a shot at beating Pacquiao and honestly, I can't knock them either. So why not? I say sure, make it happen.
But if this fight were to happen, and if Marquez truly wants to do it as much as he says he does, he needs to be professional and realistic about it. Pacquiao does not respond to childish taunts. Marquez tried that once before when he came all the way to the Philippines just to insult and call out Pacquiao when he brought a fight contract and a pen for the Filipino idol to sign. It didn't work.

Pacquiao doesn't need to fight Marquez and has nothing really to prove against the aged opponent he already beat and even floored 4 times in the process. There's a reason why he's never walked around wearing a shirt that says 'I beat Marquez twice'. Marquez was just another one of his stepping stones to greatness, unlike Marquez who appears to be using his wars with Pacquiao as his main claim to being great.
Marquez can't expect more than a 30% split from Pacquiao. I don't even know if Pacquiao would give him that. As far as the Olympic-style testing, forget about it. A fair catch-weight would be at 144 with Pacquiao's welter belt on the line. Marquez fought Mayweather a year ago at that contracted catch-weight, so it's only right for Pacquiao to do the same thing. Pacquiao easily makes 144 and how he does against Marquez will be a good gauge for boxing fans to see where Pacquiao truly stands compared to Mayweather at this point.
If Marquez demands all kinds of crazy stuff, he might as well watch Mosley fight Pacquiao in May. If this truly is about his pride, it will happen. If it's just for the money and cashing-in, it won't. Pacquiao can make a fortune against several other people. Can you say the same for Marquez? Marquez will need to sacrifice and swallow his pride a bit for a chance to defend his pride and claims. 30-70 split at 144 should do it. If he asks for more, then he simply wants a big payday before he retires or enjoys the sympathy he gets from his fans when he cries he got robbed twice against Pacquiao.
This is not about fear or anything else. Pacquiao and Marquez are both warriors that have proven their courage as boxers by historically taking on all comers. No need for trash talk and hurling offenses. If Marquez wants it bad enough, it'll happen. It's simple. It's common sense.

very nice article! dennis, i think you got a great common sense! if i were to compare this write up to a boxing bout... it's like the pacquiao hatton fight! you really ko'ed marquez' antics with your pen! on the other hand, you should understand marquez for his loud talk because he got no common sense in regards to fight negtiation, that's why he turned down an offer of 750,000 dollars with an outright rematch with manny not long after their first fight. he chosed instead to travel to australia and fight chris john and got a fight purse that is amost equivalent to his plane round trip ticket...

For the record, if Manny fights Marquez a third time, this won't be a competitive fight at all. Manny would knock out Marquez for good. I don't know what the big hype was about him beating Katsidis. Sure, he's a blood and guts warrior and all, but he lost to Casamayor and Diaz, whom Marquez already defeated... so we expect Marquez to win. Nevertheless, to shut up Marquez for good and as an act of charity to him so he can have a nice retirement nest, Manny should oblige him and give him what he wishes for. It is an easy fight for Manny and he doesn't he deserve a easy fight after the battle he's been through. I don't buy Arum's crap that the fight would not sell. It would, better than Pacquiao-Clottey, that's for sure. On this issue, it seems that Arum is not looking out for Pacquaio's best interest, but only for himself.

I agree with you dennis! Pacquiao's unprecendented achievement gains respect for himself. He gained it by hardwork, professionalism, and religiousity as well. For Pacquiao this achievement is sacred because he dedicated every victory to Filipino and God. And being in the position where he is now, any challenge approach to him must express respect & professionalism not in childish and unprofessional manner. You are correct that Pacquiao should not respond to Marquez's challenge if he is doing it in that wrong manner. Marquez must learn that sportsmanship for athlets includes professionalism and respect.

Set aside my objections of a Pacquiao dole-out to Marquez and gbp minions, coz' they doesn't deserve it after all of those un-classy moves. There are some angles for this fight to happen;
A fight with Marquez and Mosley will diminish substantially the remaining bullets of floyd and will eventually surrender.
I'm pretty sure that Manny will annihilate these two remaining gbp-floyd fixed fights. Even Mosley comes-out with his best when he did against Margarito.
Marquez-Katsidis fight didn't sell on PPV. He wants Pacman for his selling power. Marquez claimed he beat Pacman 2x and why is he begging for a 3rd fight.

Arum said that if Marquez wants to fight manny, it has to be at 147. Also, the money that he will be receving will be the same exact amount he received when he fought mayweather or less but no more than that. Arum added that there will be no other promoter for the fight except him, no Gbp or Marquez promotion.
