Common barriers to travel and tips on how to overcome them

Traveling is an amazing adventure. Whether you're taking a road trip to a national park or flying across the globe to see the pyramids of Egypt, traveling truly provides endless opportunities for relaxation, adventure, and learning. However, many individuals face specific obstacles that make traveling difficult. Luckily, many of these common barriers can be minimized or even eliminated.

Cost: Many individuals feel that they cannot travel simply because it costs too much. Yes, depending on the location and duration of the trip, traveling can become very expensive. Generally, flights and accommodations tend to affect the wallet the most. However, even if you do not have an unlimited discretionary income, it is still possible to travel. Instead of flying to another country, get a group of friends together to take a road trip to Nashville. Can afford a flight to Europe but not the accommodations? Think again. Hostels are commonplace around Europe and in places throughout the world and provide an excellent budget-friendly alternative. The best advice is just to research what it is you want to do and experience, and then consider how you can go about the financial aspect of it. Many individuals who have wanted to see the world used volunteer opportunities to make it happen! Anything is possible.

Time: Another common barrier that holds individuals back from traveling is their perceived lack of free time to do so. Yes, everyone is busy! However, even with just a long weekend, you can do a lot. Destinations like Las Vegas, New York City, and Chicago don't require an extended period of time to get a lot out of the trip. Besides, spending more than just three days in a place like Las Vegas means you might end up spending more money than you intended to! Ultimately, if you want to see places around the U.S., or even the world, you have to learn to make time for it. If you don't, you may regret it one day when you look back and realize that you sacrificed traveling for overtime hours at work.

No Companion to Travel With: Many people indicate that they choose not to travel because they have no one to travel with. Even if you do not have friends or family members who enjoy or care to travel, it is not impossible to find other individuals like yourself who are eager to get out there but really have no one to join them. Luckily, there are various websites, such as TravBuddy.com that allow you to find other people who are traveling to the same destinations as you. A second option is to go to your local travel agency and sign up for a group trip. Regardless of the route, finding a traveling buddy who is just as enthusiastic about traveling as you are is completely possible.

Lack of knowledge: It is sad to think that there are some people who decide to never travel because they aren't aware of whats out there. In this instance, a little knowledge can go a long way. If you have never traveled in the past and have never even considered it, do some research on what is out there. You might be amazed to find what the world has to offer. From Paris' Eiffel Tower, to Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains, and The Great Wall of China, there is no limit to the the amount of things you can experience. With just a little time and research, you may be able to determine exactly what specific destinations have to offer. Often times, this will ignite a spark in you called the travel bug! Beware though: Once you get the travel bug, it generally does not go away!

Fear of the Unknown and Unfamiliar: Yes, traveling will force you to step outside your comfort zone. You will have to interact with new people, navigate new towns and cities, and try to overcome culture shock at certain destinations. However, these are not experiences that should be looked down upon, feared, or dreaded. Traveling is an awesome opportunity and fear isn't going to get you anywhere. While although the first few days of your trip may be intimidating and overwhelming, you will eventually become more comfortable in the new locale. After traveling to different destinations often, the whole process will really become second nature. You will learn how to acclimate yourself to the area and be a travel warrior in no time!

Do you feel personally influenced or controlled by any of these barriers? If so, consciously consider what you can do to overcome them. At the end of the day, traveling is something everyone should experience and enjoy. So, whose ready to pack their bags and prepare for an adventure?
