Commentary: 'Supernatural' new episode 'Trial and Error' promo analysis

Well, I have to say the last three episodes have been great TV at least for me and from what I've read a lot of other viewers, too. Last week's episode, "Everyone Hates Hitler" was nothing short of awesome. We had story and character development, oh, did I mention honest to goodness brother moments! I have to admit the fangirl in me came out with a few squees of joy and I was smiling most of the episode. It was really wonderful TV, in my opinion, and Ben Edlund did not disappoint with the script.

Now, I watched the CW promo, the CHCH promo and the sneak preview for this week's new episode, "Trial and Error" and I was excited for this episode when I read the synopsis and that excitement doubled when I viewed the promo's. I watched once for enjoyment and then frame by frame to see what was going by so fast. There is a lot to see when you go slow and I have to say this episode looks packed full of action and potential brother angst, hot diggy dog!

What I noticed at regular speed and frame by frame and my thoughts:

1.) Dean and Sam both have scenes in the promos where they are wearing glasses -- Now, I found the glasses reminiscent of the movie "Thirteen Ghosts" when the people wear special glasses that allow them to see the ghosts that are invisible to the naked eye. Perhaps, the boys must face some of their tests with these glasses, I'm not sure. Of course, that begs the question if they are given these glasses then who or what supplies them. The promo's clearly show scenes with Dean wearing them and scenes where Sam is donning them, too.

2.) Kevin unconscious on the floor with a bloody nose -- maybe, exhaustion finally took its toll or possibly, prophet's have an expiration date, not sure, but I hope he stays on SPN for a while as I like the character. We'll see, but he isn't looking too healthy in the sneak peek or the promo's and even Dean points out to him that he doesn't look good. Here's hoping Kevin survives episode 14 and season 8, after all, I think more tablets are out there beyond what we've been told, so far this season which will need to be decoded.

3.) The scene I supplied a screen shot of shows Sam wearing the glasses and is being straddled by someone or something, it looks human but not sure. However, one thing is very clear, Sam is in horrible pain and it appears he is being ripped open in the abdominal region and in the background Dean is on the ground watching with a distressed look on his face. In the CHCH promo Dean does say in regard to the trials they must face set forth by God, "we both know where this ends, one of us dead," so does one of them have to die? Maybe, but let's not wring our hands just yet. Kevin says in the promo, "fear not danger, nor death nor getting your spine ripped out through your mouth," etc., so maybe it's facing the danger and death but in the end it resets when the trials are complete and the sacrifice of life is made in order to close the Gates of Hell. I'm not sure but we know when all is said and done the boys have to survive, otherwise, our beloved show would end this week forever.

I know some fans are concerned over the notion of the Gates of Hell being closed and that they think: no Hell = no demons and no demons = no Supernatural, but I don't think that is true. There is plenty of the Supernatural still walking about the Earth and the lack of demons coming from Hell doesn't mean an end to the show. The tablet only tells how to close the Gates of Hell forever locking demons away that are in Hell, but what of the demons that are topside, maybe in meatsuits? They can't get back to the pit when the gates close forever, so I doubt it's an end to all demons. At any rate, I think there is enough things that go bump in the night to fuel the show even without demons.

I like where the show appears to be headed creatively and think Jeremy Carver was the breath of fresh air the show needed after the lack luster Leviathan storyline. Plus, I have to add that the recent brother bonding on screen reminds me of the earlier seasons and it makes me smile. I've been vocal with the fandom issues at the start of this season and asked myself during season seven: what keeps us watching. Those pieces can be read here: Season 8 Commentary and Season 7 - What Keep Us Watching and I'm sure I will continue to support and fight for our show for as long as it's on TV.

This season will culminate with 23 episodes and I'm thrilled for the ride ahead and I'm feeling confident that the CW Network will green light a season 9 for our show. The renewal hasn't happened yet, but I think the network would have to be nuts not to renew. Anyway, the SPN Family would raise all holy heck if the show was canceled at the end of season 8. I have no doubt the fandom would rain down a biblical-level misery on the network as I remember the 'salt and burn the CW' tweets when the network delayed the mid-season 6 premiere in lieu of encores of "Nikita" and "The Vampire Diaries".

So, watch the promos and the sneak peek and formulate your own ideas of what you think is going to happen, feel free to leave your ideas in the comments. My theories are trial and error, just like this week's episode title, but I'm eager to see what pans out and where the episode leaves us when it concludes. Promote and watch our show!
