Commentary: Interesting, yet unnecessary language in local TV news programs

See also

I had noticed some unusual, yet unnecessary language being used on a frequent basis on local TV news programs recently such as the word "historic" being used by reporters for WALA-TV, WKRG-TV, and WPMI-TV to describe the floods that took place in their broadcast areas on the Tuesday of April 29th and the Wednesday of April 30th, the word "poison" being used by news presenters for WALA-TV to describe a synthetic form of marijuana called "spice", and the word "washout" being used by reporters for WPMI-TV and WKRG-TV to describe the holes in local roads that were caused by the floods. If I were in charge of the news department at either one of those stations, I would have advised against using the words in local news programming and suggested referring to the holes as simply "holes".
