Commentary: Coyotes fans yawn at latest ownership report

I offer my apologies to those who think Phoenix Coyotes fans are a little indifferent these days.

You see, after two years of potential owners who have walked away, City of Glendale incompetence and a parade of false reports; most local hockey fans see the recent report of a mystery buyer with a yawn and a grain of salt.

And the fact that a local radio station is also reporting that the sale could be completed soon doesn’t seem to really help much… We’ve witnessed this song and dance before.

But while most local hockey fans have shown apathy at these recent reports, there are two items of note in the report that have raised some eyebrows.

While a local sports radio station here in the Valley is reporting that a “mystery buyer” is about ready to end this whole fiasco, John Shannon of Rogers Sportsnet (who has been a more reliable source throughout the process; refusing to resort to doom, gloom and play upon people’s heartstrings for ratings and readership) reported on Twitter that there is no mystery buyer and that Jerry Reinsdorf is well-positioned in the ownership drivers seat.

The second item of note is that this mystery buyer reportedly is based on the West Coast, has experience owning an NHL franchise, is familiar with the Phoenix marketplace, and money is “no issue.”

If the reports are true, who could this person possibly be? Can anyone think of a former NHL executive from Vancouver, San Jose, Los Angeles or Anaheim who could be throwing his hat in the circus in Arizona?

But with a new week upon us, we will soon find out which report (if any- because as you know, anything is possible in this saga) was right.

And while it’s fun to pass the time during the dog days of summer speculating with our hockey buddies on who could swoop in and buy the Coyotes, we’ve come to the point now where talk of a pending sale and announcements that the Coyotes are going to be on the agenda at a future city council meeting simply aren’t good enough anymore.

The fans want to hear talks of an introductory press conference for the new owner; they want to see the new faces of the front office actually in place.

What they want is closure, and after 27 months of uncertainty, they deserve it.
