Once upon a time - it may be hard to imagine now - planeswalkers never got their own Magic cards. Before the in-story event, the Mending, they were simply too powerful - basically deities in mortal form, unable to age or die and capable of creating and destroying entire worlds on a whim. Then the planeswalker card type came around, and after maybe a little initial reservation, everyone loved it.
Now, people like the new generation of planeswalkers - from the Lorwyn Five on forward - well enough, but there's also demand for old ones to get their due on cards finally. We got a taste of that with Bolas and Karn, and Commander 2014 is obliging yet again with the faces of the decks apparently all being pre-Mending planeswalker characters with an ability that lets them be commanders! The monoblue Peer Through Time deck has this long-suffering Tolarian hero who's previously gotten a creature card:
Teferi, Temporal Archmage 4UU
Planeswalker - Teferi (Mythic)
+1: Look at the top two cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and the other on the bottom of your library.
-1: Untap up to four target permanents.
-10: You get an emblem with "You may activate loyalty abilities of planeswalkers you control on any player's turn any time you could cast an instant."
Teferi, Temporal Archmage can be your commander.
For a six-mana planeswalker, Teferi's +1 ability comes off as sort of weak, but hey, that's the only kind of time manipulation flavored ability that can appear on a common instant or sorcery, so into the +1 pile it goes. His -1 one, on the other hand, is all kinds of scary, letting you get an almost full discount on the mana you spent to cast him as soon as he's on the battlefield, in reference to the infamous, broken "free spells" of Urza block. The -10 is almost impossible to evaluate, simply because of its uniqueness and the sheer amount of planeswalker support it needs to be good; but suffice it to say eternal formats Superfriends.dec is plotting about this one.
What do you think of this time-mage planeswalker of ages past? Let me know in the comments.
